Roora

(Traditional Wedding)

LOVE BEYOND TRADITION

What is Roora?

This process is a post colonial twist on a centuries long tradition and is an important bonding process where both the bride and groom's family can vet each other before making a life-long commitment. The marriage is not just between the Bride and Groom, but also the two families as they merge into one.

We cannot wait to be one big family!

Traditional Roora (the old way)

Roora, or lobola, is a traditional Zimbabwean custom where the groom's family shows appreciation for the bride's family before she joins their family. This was done by offering a part of their family enterprise (farming, wood-working etc.) or livestock as a marriage dowry. This practice , thoroughly vetted the groom and his intentions, strengthened family ties, showed respect, and ensured the groom's ability to provide the bride with a sense of security. It also helps both families to know each other so that if the couple ever faces problems, the families can more effectively counsel them. As a form of unifying the two families, it played a crucial role in Zimbabwean marriage customs.

Modern Roora

In modern Zimbabwe, Roora has evolved to include the use of money as a form of payment instead of traditional livestock like cows. This shift towards monetary payments is often influenced by factors such as urbanization (people now have modern careers like IT which make it harder to determine the form in which the Roora should be presented. Also taking into account globalization, changing economic conditions, and the desire for more practical and convenient transactions- money is used.
